Toyosu Market guide: history, hidden spots and events nearby
Tokyo's wholesale "kitchen," moved here from Tsukiji on October 11, 2018. From the windows of the visitor corridor you can look down on the early-morning tuna auction for free. Win the advance lottery and you can watch from a deck right beside the auction floor.
Kyochika's tips
- The auction starts around 5:30 and lasts about an hour. Our suggestion: an early start, watching the auction from the visitor corridor and then eating breakfast at a restaurant inside the market. Popular sushi shops tend to have queues, especially on Saturdays and at lunchtime.
- Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai next door is reported to stay open on market closure days, so head there if you hit a closed day. Eating is not allowed in the corridors or on the benches.

Why did the market move from Tsukiji to Toyosu?
Tokyo's fish market began in the early Edo period, when Tokugawa Ieyasu brought fishermen from Osaka to Edo to supply Edo Castle. In 1610 the Mori family was allowed to sell surplus fish to townspeople. The 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the Nihonbashi market, and it reopened at Tsukiji in 1935.
Tsukiji grew into the world's largest fish market after the war, but by around 1963, when Tokyo's population passed 10 million, it was running out of space and a new site was sought. Five candidates including Harumi and Ariake-kita were compared, and reclaimed land at Toyosu was agreed on in 2001.
Town gas was produced on the Toyosu site from 1956 to 1988, and soil and groundwater contamination by seven substances including benzene had been confirmed. The move, planned for November 7, 2016, was postponed by Governor Koike on August 31, partly to wait for groundwater monitoring results. The market finally opened on October 11, 2018, moving from Tsukiji after 83 years.

A tuna sold in about five seconds
The auction floor is lined with about 200 fresh and 1,000 frozen tuna. Fish worth hundreds of thousands to millions of yen each are knocked down one after another in about five seconds.
Traditions from the old Nihonbashi fish market, such as bidding with hand signals and a market shrine, carry on at Toyosu today.

The "three doubts" that stopped the move
On August 31, 2016, Governor Koike announced that the move to Toyosu would be postponed. Her three reasons were safety (waiting for two years of groundwater monitoring), cost (the total project cost had grown from ¥392.6 billion in 2011 to ¥588.4 billion by March 2015), and a lack of information disclosure.
Building construction costs had also grown from ¥99 billion to ¥275.2 billion. About two years after the postponement, the market opened in October 2018.

How was the old gasworks site fixed?
The Toyosu site was reclaimed from 1954, and a town-gas plant operated there from 1956 to 1988. Contamination by seven substances was confirmed: benzene, cyanide compounds, arsenic, lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium and cadmium.
As countermeasures, soil was replaced down to 2 m below the gasworks-era ground level, and 2.5 m of clean soil was added on top. Contaminated groundwater was pumped up and treated.

The viewing deck opened in 2019
The viewing deck right beside the auction floor opened on January 15, 2019. At first there were two sessions between 5:45 and 6:15, with up to 60 people each.
Today viewing runs 5:45–6:25 with 100 people per day by lottery. Applications are taken month by month: for August 2026, applications ran July 1–7 and results came out on the 16th.

An "Edo town" next door
On February 1, 2024, Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai opened next to the market. It has two parts: a food building recreating an Edo-period streetscape, and Tokyo Toyosu Manyo Club, a 24-hour hot spring building.
The food building has about 70 restaurants, and its clock tower, the Toki no Kane, chimes at 10:00, 12:00, 15:00, 18:00 and 21:00. On the 8th floor of the hot spring building is a footbath garden that anyone can use for free (10:00–20:00).

Toyosu or Tsukiji?
Toyosu is an enclosed market, which makes temperature and hygiene easier to control. Visitors walk along pedestrian decks from the station and through visitor corridors, watching without getting in the way of market work. Tsukiji Outer Market is a shopping street of independent shops where anyone can walk in and buy.
Our take: to see a real auction at work, go to Toyosu; for a street-food atmosphere, go to Tsukiji. Toyosu's strength is that you can do the market in the morning and Senkyaku Banrai in the afternoon in a single day.
