About this event

The abbot's hall of Ryoginan, a sub-temple of Tofukuji, is the oldest surviving building of its kind and a National Treasure. For the autumn maple season, the hall opens together with three gardens by garden designer Shigemori Mirei. The south garden, the 'Garden of Nothingness', is bare white sand, described as the proper form for a hall used for ceremonies. The west 'Dragon Garden' uses stones to show a dragon rising from the sea through black clouds, a nod to the temple's name. The east 'Garden of Inseparability' is based on a childhood legend of the founder Mukan Fumon. The temple recommends listening to the explanation given during the visit.
