Could an inscription on a bell change a temple's fate?

Tentokuin was founded between 1346 and 1370 by the Tofukuji abbot Mumu Issei. One of Tofukuji's five principal subtemples, it flourished before declining and later being restored. Its history became entangled in the rivalry between the Toyotomi and Tokugawa families.

In 1614, Bunei Seikan became the temple's abbot. A respected scholar-monk favored by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Hideyori, he composed an inscription for a bell at Hokoji at Hideyori's request. The text included the phrases Kokka Anko and Kunshin Horaku.

Tokugawa Ieyasu regarded those words as a curse against his family. According to temple tradition, his anger led to Tentokuin's destruction. The present buildings were reconstructed in 1789, preserving the memory of both destruction and renewal.

Today moss and autumn leaves create a peaceful scene at a temple with a turbulent political past. That is why you should view its garden while remembering the controversy surrounding the bell at Hokoji.
