About this event
In 1576 the Church of the Assumption, known as the 'Nanbanji of the capital', was dedicated in Kyoto. It was later destroyed amid the ban on Christianity and persecution, and 2026 marks exactly 450 years since its dedication. The exhibition uses rare materials to trace the Portuguese and Spanish 'Nanban' visitors who came to Japan from the mid-16th to the 17th century, the exchange between East and West, and the history of the ban and persecution of Christianity. Some items change between Part 1 (until Nov 22) and Part 2 (from Nov 25).
