About this event

Funakatayama Fumonji, a Koyasan Shingon mountain temple in Toyohashi, Aichi, is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki in the Nara period. Ahead of its 1,300th anniversary in 2027, its treasures have come to the Ryukoku Museum, across the street from Nishi Honganji. According to the catalog, about 50 cultural properties trace the temple's history. At the center are late Heian-period Important Cultural Properties: a seated Buddha believed to be Shakyamuni, a seated Amida, and two of the Four Heavenly Kings, Komokuten and Zochoten. A prayer tablet dated 1161 and a 1569 document signed by Tokugawa Ieyasu are also shown. The exhibition has three chapters, from the temple's golden age through the samurai era to its revival.
