About this event

Six performers from After Hours bring live jazz to the formal flower garden at Yamate Italian Garden during Yokohama's Autumn Yamate Rose Week. The performance features jazz vocals by Tomiyo Muto, Sumiko Okabe, Kimiko Hasegawa and Masahiro Muto, accompanied by Keiko Koizumi on piano and Yasushi Kinugawa on bass. Presented in front of the garden's formal flowerbeds, the concert invites visitors to listen to music while appreciating the autumn roses. The setting is also connected to the Diplomat's House, a historic Western-style residence originally built in 1910 for Japanese diplomat Uchida Sadatsuchi. Its American Victorian-influenced architecture gives the surrounding garden a distinctive historical context. Unlike a seated indoor recital, the concert is organized as a standing outdoor performance, with no advance application required. The combination of jazz, seasonal flowers and Yokohama's preserved Western-style architecture makes this a garden-centered music event rather than a conventional concert-hall performance.

Summarized from the official page and press materials.

What connects Yokohama's rose gardens with a century-old diplomat's residence?

The Diplomat's House was originally built in 1910 in Nanpeidai, Shibuya, as the residence of Japanese diplomat Uchida Sadatsuchi, who served in positions including consul general in New York and ambassador to Turkey. American architect J. M. Gardiner designed the two-story wooden building, incorporating American Victorian influences such as decorative exterior detailing, weatherboard siding and a slate roof. Its interior also reflects Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts influences. Yokohama City received the building as a donation in 1997, relocated and restored it within Yamate Italian Garden, and opened it to the public.

The building was designated a National Important Cultural Property in the same year. Today, visitors can explore reconstructed interiors and exhibits about diplomatic life, architecture and the building's history. The wider Yamate district is closely connected to Yokohama's development as an international port and former foreign residential area. Its preserved Western-style houses sit among gardens that change with the seasons. Autumn Yamate Rose Week uses that combination of architecture, flowers and public space as the setting for music. So explore the garden and the exterior of the historic residence alongside the concert.
