Sheep-shaped illuminations celebrate the zodiac animal of 2027 at the 15th edition of Mother Illumi. From a hillside approximately 300 meters above sea level, visitors can admire Mount Fuji's silhouette and nighttime views across Tokyo Bay toward Tokyo and Yokohama. A large photo frame captures the illuminated flower field with Mount Fuji in the distance. What is the story behind the name Mother Farm?

The word Mother in Mother Farm comes from founder Hisakichi Maeda's memories of his own mother. Maeda, a businessman involved in founding Sankei Shimbun and Tokyo Tower, grew up in a poor farming family in Tengachaya, Osaka. As a boy, he remembered seeing his mother sewing late into the night by a small light, often wishing they had just one cow to make life easier.

Maeda never forgot that wish. Hoping to advance agriculture, livestock farming and farmers' livelihoods, he established the farm on Mount Kano in February 1962 and named it Mother Farm in memory of his late mother. An international livestock exhibition followed in 1965, piglet races began in 1970 and the sheep parade started in 1972.

Today Mother Farm is known for its flowers, amusement rides and animal encounters, but its name began with a mother's simple wish for a cow. When viewing the illuminated sheep, remember the farming history behind this popular attraction.
