How did Kyoto Station's giant staircase become a stage for light?

Kyoto Station Building is much more than a place to catch trains. It combines transport facilities with a hotel, shops, cultural spaces and public plazas, serving as a major gateway to Japan's historic capital.

The present station building officially opened on September 11, 1997. Its development was guided by the concept of a station acting as a medium for the culture and energy of the city. The idea was to turn railway architecture into a place where Kyoto's culture could be shared.

The Grand Stairway illumination gives this concept a visible form. Seasonal imagery, festivals, traditional flower cards and greetings appear across the staircase. Architecture designed for movement becomes a giant canvas for public art.

Kyoto has attracted travelers from across Japan for centuries, and its modern station continues to welcome visitors from around the world. So when watching the illumination, look at how the individual steps combine into a single animated image.

What role did Kyoto Station play in the city's history?

Kyoto Station represents the modern transportation history of the ancient capital. The present station building opened in 1997, while the company responsible for its operation was established in 1990.

The development brought together rail transport, a hotel, shops, cultural facilities and public spaces. Its guiding concept envisioned the station as a medium for communicating the city's culture and energy, rather than merely a place to change trains.

As a result, Kyoto Station has become both a transportation hub and a destination for shopping, culture and sightseeing. So when walking through the station, look at the Grand Stairway and the public spaces surrounding it.
