Where did the name Chinzanso come from, and who created its celebrated garden?

The grounds of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo were once known as Tsubakiyama, or Camellia Hill. Their modern story began with Aritomo Yamagata, a prominent Meiji-era politician. In 1878, he purchased the land with his own funds, built a residence and garden, and named the estate Chinzanso. He personally guided the garden's design and engaged noted Tokyo gardener Katsugoro Iwamoto, creating a landscape shaped by the slopes and waterways of the Mejiro plateau.

In 1918, the estate passed to Heitaro Fujita, the second head of the Fujita organization. Air raids in 1945 destroyed much of the residence and its trees. After the war, Eiichi Ogawa restored the greenery and opened Chinzanso as a garden restaurant in 1952. The Four Seasons Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo opened on the grounds in 1992, and the properties were unified under the current Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo name in 2013.

The area also preserves a literary past. Poet Matsuo Basho once lived near the grounds at what became Sekiguchi Bashoan, while artist Hiroshige depicted the area's scenery in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. So when enjoying the Christmas sweets, take a moment to appreciate the greenery inherited from this historic garden.
