When torn paper becomes a new landscape

Tearing paper usually means destroying something. In collage, however, the torn pieces become the building blocks of a new artwork. Kota Tonoike brings together fragments of printed images, lettering and colored paper to create unexpected compositions.

The exhibition's playful title evokes the sound and sensation of paper being ripped apart. Irregular edges and surprising combinations are part of the artistic process. Visitors can look closely at how individual fragments come together to form a larger image.

A related workshop introduces participants to collage using old magazines and discarded paper. According to Kyoto City's event information, no materials or drawing experience are required. The focus is on selecting, arranging and combining existing images.

The exhibition takes place at Rendezvous Gallery & Cafe in Kyoto's Kamigyo district. By bringing together finished artworks and a practical workshop, it offers a chance to see ordinary paper from a completely different perspective.

Long ago, around here

Was this neighborhood once close to the shogun's castle?

Nakatsukasacho lies north of Nijo Castle, one of the most important political landmarks of the Tokugawa period. The castle was completed in 1603 under Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo shogunate. It served as an important base for relations between the military government and the imperial court in Kyoto.

In 1867, the last Tokugawa shogun, Yoshinobu, announced his decision to return political authority to the emperor at Nijo Castle. Its surviving palace buildings, stone walls and moats recall Kyoto's role in Japanese political history. There is no verified evidence that the gallery site itself formed part of the castle.

So when walking through Nakatsukasacho, look towards the stone walls and moats of nearby Nijo Castle. Everyday neighborhood streets stand remarkably close to a place that witnessed a major turning point in Japanese history.
