About this event
This night opening grew from one idea: what if Yamagata Aritomo, the Meiji-era statesman who built the garden, had designed its lighting himself? Murin-an, his villa near Nanzenji Temple, opens its garden at night for only five days in the autumn leaf season, 30 people at a time. There are two sessions, from 17:30 and from 19:30. Guests hear a short talk by a garden concierge, walk the illuminated garden, and choose matcha or sparkling wine with original sweets at the cafe. The venue covers the first and second floors of the main house, the garden and the Western-style building. The fee is 4,500 yen, including the cafe and talk. Booking is first-come, and a day does not run if fewer than 14 people book. It is about 7 minutes on foot from Keage Station on the Tozai subway line. A small-group evening to take your time with the garden.
