Did Toyotomi Hideyoshi once hold a grand tea gathering here?
Kitano Tenmangu was founded in 947 to honor Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and statesman who later came to be revered as a deity of learning. The shrine became an important center of worship in Kyoto.
In 1587, Toyotomi Hideyoshi organized the famous Grand Kitano Tea Gathering in this area. It became a landmark event in the history of Japanese tea culture. The shrine's present National Treasure buildings were constructed in 1607 under Toyotomi Hideyori.
So when walking through Kitano Tenmangu, look at the National Treasure shrine buildings and the spacious grounds. The place where today's craft market gathers also carries memories of ancient religious traditions and the grand cultural gatherings of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
