A festive afternoon of sweets in Kyoto
Christmas brings a special sense of theater to the world of pastry. Ornaments, gift boxes and reindeer become edible decorations at Hilton Kyoto's Christmas Sweet Moments dessert buffet.
French Executive Pastry Chef Guillaume Bonnafoux oversees creations including reindeer-shaped Paris-Brest pastries, forest berry jelly with Tahitian vanilla mousse, and a gift-box dessert combining yuzu and pistachio. Familiar Christmas imagery is translated into distinctive flavors and textures.
Live stations add another dimension. Pastry chefs prepare Mont Blanc and Christmas s'mores in front of guests, while an interactive WISH TREE invites visitors to write down and display their wishes.
The buffet takes place at Téori, Hilton Kyoto's all-day dining restaurant near the Kawaramachi-Sanjo area. It offers a festive contrast to the city's temples and historic streets, making it a seasonal stop during a winter visit.

Was there once a busy cargo canal near here?
A short walk east from Kawaramachi-Sanjo leads to Kiyamachi Street and the Takase River. This narrow canal was constructed in 1614 by merchant Suminokura Ryoi and his son Soan to connect central Kyoto with Fushimi.
During the Edo period, flat-bottomed Takase boats carried goods along the waterway. Merchants and warehouses gathered near the river, and Kiyamachi's name reflects its historical connection with the timber trade. The canal played an important role in supplying Kyoto.
So when exploring Kawaramachi-Sanjo, walk east and look at the narrow Takase River. What now appears to be a peaceful urban waterway was once a vital transportation route linking Kyoto's commercial life to Fushimi.
